Castle Cary started extremely well — considering the home team were the underdogs. Martock applied pressure on the Cary 22 for most of the first half. Yet a well-tuned Cary defence left Martock with a lack of options. The trying conditions determined that the game would involve a lot of kicking. The wind kept Cary in their own half, as defensive kicking was not an option. The home side made the most of their brief possession with two break-outs — leaving Martock outnumbered in defence. The second half saw Martock begin strongly and capitalise with a try within minutes of the restart. The result continued to be hard to call with each side equalling the other's efforts. With two minutes of normal time remaining, Castle Cary's scrum half James Hill made a blindside dash: with excellent, quick hands Cary managed to try with Guy Clothier grabbing the honours. Ben Snook secured the conversion. Martock rallied and applied immediate pressure on Cary's try line. This worked well as Martock gained the winning try in extra time, which turned out to be the last play of the game. by James Travers
