A very physical game. Castle Cary knew they were in for a tough one from the kick-off with Wells penetrating Cary's 22. They stayed there for most of the first half, with a constant ebb and flow of scrummaging rucks and mauls. Wells' first try came from a tactical kick taken from a ruck on the touchline that found a gap in the visitors' defence. It was caught by a Wells line-back and driven over the line. Wells continued to use the rucks and mauls to extend their lead to 17-0, despite Cary's strong defending and winning the majority line-out balls. At the start of the second half, Cary changed tactics by putting more strength into the backs. This was soon rewarded with a try that started in Cary's half and was touched down by Maurice (Mo) McCall. The remainder of the game was closely fought with Wells gaining one more try from a rolling maul which was converted. Cary's captain, Steve Armson — fresh back from injury and sporting his new nose — commented on the game, "The scoreline did not reflect the closeness of the game and the great team spirit displayed by Cary." by James Travers
