This was a closely fought game played in near perfect conditions for rugby. Morganians fancied their chances throughout the game, and luck was on their side in the closing minutes. Castle Cary dominated the game for the first half, with the visitors starving the hosts of any possession, yet Cary did not convert any of their hard-worked moves. This proved to be costly as Morganians had a breakout after 30 minutes and scored and converted the try. Cary came back stronger with excellent interchanges between No.8, Tony Reynolds and fly-half Paul Hills. The latter made a clean break for a foot race to the tryline — yet once the try was scored he was pulled back for a foot in touch. The hosts' linesman convinced the referee to disallow the try. Cary still fought hard, breaking through Morganians' first line of defence. Tony Reynolds proved to be difficult to deal with at the back of the scrum and crashed over to score from twenty yards. After the restart, with Cary down to fourteen men (Martin White sin-binned) they managed a second score with stand-in scrum-half James Hills scoring an opportunist try. His up-and-under outwitted the hosts' full-back and Hills won the race to the line. Cary lept into the lead for the next half-hour, yet did not take advantage of their better form. The tide started to turn against Cary with the laws of rucking becoming blurred. With five minutes to go, Cary conceded a penalty in their twenty-two. Morganians chose to drive to the line. With fortunes completely faded, Morganians went over for a held-up try. They took the victory a few minutes after. by James Travers
