With Cary playing their last league game of the season and wanting to finish on a high the whole team put in a massive effort to secure a respectable third place in the league. Playing up hill in the first half, Cary missed several opportunities, not using the overlap when the opportunities arose. This oversight put pressure on the home side, giving Wiveliscombe a glimpse of hope, only for Cary to turn the ball over and maintain their lead. Tempers flared on both sides as frustration set in, seeing a total of five yellow cards issued — two to the visitors and three to Castle Cary, including team captain, Russell Churchouse, for a late tackle and player/coach, James Atkins, for punching. With Cary temporarily down to 12 men Wivey threw everything at Cary but outstanding defence work from Tom Newth and Paul Hoggett kept the visitors at bay, and tries were secured by Ben Snook, Brendan Hickman, Russell Churchouse, Jamie Smith and Guy Clothier (newly back from injury). Robbie Blackburn secured one conversion The Cary coaching staff are delighted with the massive improvements demonstrated from all players this year and the resulting league position. |
