Castle Cary now have nearly twenty regulars in their Under 8s squad, and so despite the snowy weather were able to field two full seven-a-side tag teams against old rivals, Ivel Barbarians.
MATCH ONE
Cary got off to the best possible start in the opening game, with captain, Tom Potter, scoring a try in the first few seconds. However, Ivel came back almost immediately with two quick tries, and held the lead throughout to take the first game by eight tries to six.
MATCH TWO
In the second match, the girls from both sides showed that they could play just as well as the boys, out-passing and out-running them on several occasions, and scoring some well-worked tries. The final score was a respectable five-all draw, reflecting the spirited and enthusiastic play of both teams.
MATCH THREE
The teams then agreed to play one final game, picking the best players from the first two matches. In a dazzling virtuoso display, Castle Cary's Josh Wiggins ran in try after try, dodging Ivel's defence to score half of Cary's eight tries. Despite rallying strongly towards the end of the first half, Ivel struggled to keep up, and had several tries disallowed in the second half. As the final whistle blew, Cary led by eight tries to four, recording their first ever victory against the Yeovil club.
