Cary 2nds were expecting a hard game and that is what they got — with Wells putting two tries over in the first ten minutes of the game, on both occasions by their forwards. This gave Cary the kick it needed to come back into the game, and for the following 30 minutes both teams played hard, aggressive rugby with bone-crunching tackles being put in by both sides — and Wells putting over one more try. Cary responded immediately from the restart when Wells' forwards fumbled the ball and Cary were 'quick up' to steal it. With fast hands the ball was fed through Cary's backs for Andy Palmer (playing on the wing) to outflank Wells and put the try over. In the second half, Wells — realising that they could no longer penetrate the Cary forwards — changed tactics and started to penetrate Cary's backs to put the trys over. Steve Armson (captain) said, "Cary played a hard game against a good side with a strong pack, and we look forward to a return match."
