This was a hard-fought, closely contested fixture at Stothert & Pitt, who were eventually able to edge out the visitors by six tries to four.

Castle Cary fielded a relatively young 2nd team, and not all players were in their preferred positions. A strong prevailing wind — together with considerable pressure from the home side — caused disruption both at the lineout and scrum, preventing any useful ball reaching the three-quarters.

In the first half, two tries were scored by Cary's no. 8, Adam Stott (one was converted by Ben Snook). Both were achieved by pre-planned penalty moves in the opposing 22. Thirty minutes into the first half, George Dampier sustained a neck injury following a collapsed scrum. He was stretchered from the field and replaced by Clive Sefia.

The second period saw two tries from the wing three-quarter, Jamie Smith. The first was a complete solo effort from loose play: he gathered the ball, chipped over defence, caught his own kick and touched down uncontested between the posts. Ben Snook converted.

Smith's second was scored on the outwide, following a good passage of three-quarters' play. Unfortunately for the visitors, S & P were equal to the task in hand and were able to outscore their opponents by a single try in each half.

Mike Gardner (captain) said, "The credit should go to the Castle Cary players who were prepared to travel to fulfil this fixture; they should take great pride in their performance."
